He wore an oversized buckskin jacket and a coonskin cap that fell loosely over his right eye. In his left hand he carried a replica flintlock pistol with an orange plastic muzzle-cap. In his right hand was a genuine, rubber Jim Bowie knife. At fifteen minutes to eight on the fifth of July, the temperature was already eighty-five degrees and climbing rapidly. By noon it would be ninety with matching humidity. Sweat trickled from under young Davy’s cap as he led his mother and father along the San Antonio River Walk path. He had been up since the crack of dawn, keeping watch out the double-pane hotel window, and waiting impatiently for his mother and father to wake up. Now, finally on patrol, he breathed the stagnant air that smelled like stale beer and damp tree bark and imagined Santa Anna’s men lurking behind every overflowing garbage bin. He smiled to himself thinking about his classmates back in Stuttgart, Germany. When school started next fall, none of them would be able to match his summer vacation story or top the items he brought to class. He was already practicing his presentation in English.
